About Alex. Dalgetty & Sons Bakers
It is for their famous, original Selkirk Bannocks that the bakery business of Alexander Dalgetty & Sons is justly famous. Alex Dalgetty worked in Selkirk at the bakery which produced the original bannock but left to set up his own Scottish food business in Galashiels at the turn of the century and so became the first producer of Selkirk Bannocks in Galashiels. From that day to this, Alex. Dalgetty & Son have been making bannocks to the original recipe in their Galashiels bakery.
The story goes that the bannock originated from the idea of a canny Scots baker who wanted to find a use for his spare bread dough. He added fruit, butter and sugar, allowed a fermentation, hand moulded the dough and baked off - the Selkirk bannock was born.
Alex. Dalgetty found his bannock to be so popular that it became necessary to make dough specifically for the production of his bannocks. His recipe, using highest quality ingredients, without adding preservatives, colouring or flavouring, is still used today in the bakery, which is run by his great grand daughter and her husband, namely Patricia and Bill Murray.
Their bannocks can be purchased from either of their two shops in Galashiels or a third in Melrose, as well as from an ever-increasing number of shops throughout Scotland and North of England.
